Have questions about postpartum doula services?

Q&A
  • Unlike a birth doula who assists during labor, a postpartum doula focuses on the weeks and months following childbirth. A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to a new mother and her family during the postpartum period, focusing on helping them adjust to life with a newborn by offering assistance with breastfeeding, pumping, and bottle feeding, infant care, physical recovery, emotional support, meal preparation, and light housework, essentially acting as a source of knowledge and support as they transition into parenthood.

  • It’s often helpful to assess your wants and needs for the 4th trimester. Many times people forget to plan for the 4th trimester, and this time period can feel very overwhelming and isolating without adequate support. Here are some things to consider:

Would you like to be able to rest (yes, really sleep and rest) to allow yourself time to heal? Do you feel stressed thinking about taking care of a new baby, maintaining the house, caring for other family members, and caring for yourself too? Do you believe that support is essential to the healing and recovery process? Is mental and emotional recovery just as important to you as your physical recovery? Do you lack consistent social support or do your support people live far from you? Would you like to simply focus on having the time and space to adjust to new life and bond with your baby?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it is very likely that postpartum doula support could be right and beneficial for you and your family. Of course, please reach out for specific questions regarding your family needs.

  • During a postpartum doula visit, you can expect personalized support with your newborn, including help with infant feeding, infant soothing techniques, light housework and meal prep, emotional support, answering questions about baby care, and assistance with integrating your new baby into the family dynamic, allowing you to rest when needed.

    • Feeding Support: Supportive, non-judgmental, and validating infant feeding support for whatever feeding method best fits the needs of you and your baby (breast, bottle, pumping, formula, and any combination of these ).

    • Infant soothing techniques: Learning different methods to calm your baby, like swaddling, rocking, or white noise.

    • Practical assistance: Light housework, laundry, and meal preparation.

    • Emotional support: A listening ear to discuss your postpartum experience, feelings, and concerns.

    • Partner involvement: Including your partner in learning baby care skills and addressing their needs.

    • Postpartum recovery discussion: Checking in on your physical recovery from birth and providing information on managing discomfort.

    • Resources and referrals to other professionals: If needed, we can connect you with lactation consultants, sleep consultants, or other specialists.

      • Our services may also include a postpartum mental health assessment.
